Overview: My Work at NCEL

Below is a sampling of digital projects I have developed and produced in my role as Communications Associate at the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL). My job includes producing multimedia educational and marketing materials, copywriting and editing documents for external use, coordinating outreach to stakeholders, as well as conducting media and policy tracking – all with the underlying mission of empowering our network of state lawmakers to take action on the most pressing environmental issues.

Created by and for state legislators, the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that organizes over 1,300 environmentally-committed state legislators from all 50 states and both parties. NCEL provides venues and opportunities for lawmakers to share ideas and collaborate on environmental issues.

Project Highlights

Recapping Policy Wins

Each year, I draft and lead the development of NCEL’s Legislative Session Recaps – a comprehensive summary of environmental policy trends and successes from the state level. This resource is commonly cited by news outlets and other organizations, and is often used to demonstrate to funders the value NCEL provides as the go-to resource for state-level environmental policy.

Storytelling to Inspire Environmental Progress

I have worked with a range of stakeholders including lawmakers, partner organizations, community members, labor interests, and more to produce multimedia content telling authentic and actionable stories of environmental progress led by lawmakers in NCEL’s network. These projects have led to new funding and partnerships for NCEL by raising awareness of the organization’s value as a resource in state policy efforts.

Coordinating & Communicating Multi-State Efforts

State lawmakers will often come to NCEL to help raise awareness and build multi-state support for environmental causes they care about. I work with the communications team to amplify these efforts by circulating sign-on letters, hosting press events, and developing communication packages (talking points, sample social media posts, press releases) for legislators in our network. These efforts have led to new earned media coverage as well as regulatory changes at the federal level.

Resource Development

I design, format, and help develop content for NCEL’s Resource Library — including fact sheets, infographics, and briefing books — that educate state lawmakers on environmental issues and policy solutions in an engaging manner. I also produce materials that illustrate NCEL’s impact — such as the Annual Report — for the purposes of fundraising, network building, and communication with the Board of Directors. Below are three samples, which can also be found on NCEL’s website.
